Chip Roy: House Republican majority has not passed 'one meaningful, significant thing' - TAI News

Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy reprimanded his GOP colleagues on Wednesday, saying in an angry speech on the House floor that the Republican House majority has been an unproductive mess.

“One thing. I want my Republican colleagues to give me one thing. One. That I can go campaign on and say we did. One,” Roy said. “Anybody sitting in the complex, if you want to come down to the floor and come explain to me one material, meaningful, significant thing the Republican majority has done besides, Well, I guess it’s not as bad as the Democrats.”

The 118th Congress has passed just 21 bills that have become law since Republicans were sworn in to the House majority in January, according to data from GovTrack. That makes this the least productive Congress since the Great Depression, according to HuffPost.

It’s a far cry from the previous Congress — when Democrats controlled both the House and the Senate — which saw the passage of 365 bills that became law, according to GovTrack.

House Republicans have spent much of the last year mired in infighting.

The Congress got off to a slow start after it took Kevin McCarthy 15 rounds of voting to win the House speakership.

In October, Congress came to a grinding halt for 22 days after Republicans ousted McCarthy from the speakership but could not coalesce behind a replacement. That 22-day span was the longest the House has gone without a speaker since 1962, according to NBC News.

Even after House Republicans elected Mike Johnson speaker, they have still been unable to pass their own federal spending bills to avert a government shutdown. Ultimately, Johnson agreed to put a short-term spending bill on the floor. It passed with 93 Republicans in opposition.

Democrats, who have been critical of the GOP dysfunction, are now using Roy’s House speech to make their point.

“Wow a top House republican just said from the floor he can’t name one meaningful thing the republican party has done in power. I can’t either!” Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) tweeted.
