Michigan Parents Can Once Again Apply for the Expanded Child Tax Credit

President Biden has reopened websites where residents can apply for the Child Tax Credit (CTC). The websites originally closed in November of 2021 to encourage parents to apply for the CTC on their tax returns instead. President Biden’s American Rescue Plan expanded the CTC in 2021. The bill increased the amount that parents received from $2,000 per child to $3,000 for each child over six years old and $3,600 for each child under six. It also made it so children up to the age of 17 qualified for the credit, and for the first time ever, gave the credit out in monthly payments. Normally you cannot get money from a tax credit until after you file your taxes the following year, but Biden began sending payments out in July of last year, and will continue to do so this year.

President Biden partnered with a non-profit named Code for America to create websites where parents can easily apply for the credit, https://www.getctc.org/ and https://www.childtaxcredit.gov/. In Macomb County, nearly 28 percent of households have children, and the majority will qualify for the full amount. According to the White House, “All working families will get the full credit if they make up to $150,000 for a couple or $112,500 for a family with a single parent (also called Head of Household).” Families making more than that can still qualify for partial credit and receive payments throughout the year as well.
